Who are we?

Shipmates is an organised social sailing group for the whole family.  Our mission is simple – to have fun on and off the water together in a welcoming and safe environment.

What do we do?

We take to the water twice a month on a Saturday afternoon with youngsters and their parents to enjoy being on the water and enhance sailing skills in an informal setting.

We are about developing lasting friendships, and to support this organise a number of social events throughout the year e.g. pancake events, film nights, Christmas parties etc. We also actively encourage our Shipmates crew to enjoy all the sailing and social offerings of the wider club.

There is no formal RYA tuition with this parent supervised sailing activity. The club offers RYA training courses for youth and adults which are advertised in the Training pages.

What do we sail?

Many of our youngsters take to the water in oppies, toppers and picos.  We also use 2000s and the club’s Hawk and Quests. It is all dependant on the weather on the day and the ability of our participants.

Own boat ownership is strongly encouraged, however for those new to the club who do not own their own boat yet, please talk to the Shipmates leaders to discuss arrangements.

Who leads the group?

Own boat ownership is strongly encouraged, however for those new to the club who do not own their own boat yet, please talk to the Shipmates leaders to discuss arrangements.

The group is currently lead by a team of RYA qualified instructors, which we are always looking to add to.  The leaders work closely with the Training team to ensure that the club’s safety standards as a Recognised RYA Training Centre are adhered to at all times.

The active support and involvement of parents and guardians is crucial to the success of Shipmates. As well as getting out on the water themselves, they get involved in assisting on the water activities and running social events. It’s great fun, and a chance for parents to learn more about sailing themselves.

Again, we encourage parents to attend more formal training run by the club (both sailing and powerboat) to maintain skill level.

How do I get involved?

To join Shipmates you need to be a family member of WWSC (see membership pages), and either be able to sail around a triangular course in light wind conditions, or have a parent who can sail.
